Butters Gallery presents recent paintings by Washington artist Debra Van Tuinen. Van Tuinen's work over the 18 years we've worked with her has grown dramatically. She has gone from making landscape paintings to deep, resolved modern abstract paintings with a fleeting, oblique reference to land, sea, or sky. Working with encaustic, Van Tuinen makes densely textured arrangements of beautifully-handled marks that come together in layers of atmospheric delight. One becomes lost in the endless depth, and while yet physically scintillated by the seductive waxy surface. Often, but only when she feels the work better served, the artist will introduce metal leaf playing along an edge to suggest a horizon or land form in the work.
Van Tuinen's work is shown on the West Coast extensively. As well, her work has been included in several international and national shows: The Biennale Internationale Dell'Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy; Site Sante Fe, Agart World Print Exhibition in Slovenia and the AFF Art Fair in New York City.
