KARL PILATO

Artist Statement

My paintings, drawings and prints involve placing one intuitively determined mark upon another to add up to an airy intricacy of light and space. The structure within each piece has coalesced out of my experience of nature and my experimentation with mark making.

My inspiration comes from the non-human world. There is a clarity of mind felt walking outside among trees and water, sensing the slant of light and breeze on one’s face. My work is about that feeling. I have painted representational landscapes in the past, but I have arrived conclusively in a world of pure abstraction. This is because that clarity of mind I seek to experience and communicate is beyond form. I am interested in creating spaces that feel like air and light and the way things fit together in the world, but open out on emptiness.

I have always loved the fundamental act of drawing--varying pressure, speed, wetness, or thickness to make a mark with a particular presence. It’s about touching and an awareness of my own physical presence. The ways marks pass through one another, or meet and separate, or parallel one another are endlessly compelling. It’s about, rhythm and infinite variation. Making decisions intuitively about the placement, form and color of marks I arrive at a complex pictorial order that reflects the natural world.
