One day while walking in my friend Lucy's garden, I picked up a few succulent leaves that had fallen on the path. The leaves were from the Echeveria plant, a very plain looking succulent with smooth, fleshy leaves. The leaves I picked up no longer resenbled the leaves that were attached to the living plant. The simple oval leaves were twisted into bizarre shapes. The uniform green color had given way to ribbons of many colors running over the uneven terrain of the leaf. I could easily imagine each leaf to be a landscape shaped over many eons by wind and water.

I find botanical transformations fascinating, even more so because of the speed of the changes. The most startling transformations seem to come at the beginning (expansion) and the end (contraction) of life. We have all experienced the magic of an amaryllis or tulip emerging from a plain, brown bulb. Less familiar, yet equally fascinating, are the transformations caused by the inward movement of contraction, withering, drying and decay.
