Artist Statement
I am interested in the way things appear, manifest and dissolve, and approach painting as a study of those processes. The constants are predetermined; the variables, then, become the object of study. For me, the variables are the combinations of the predetermined elements. The constants are the rectangle and circle, limited palette, inscribed line, and the method and materials of preparing the surface. As I paint, with no specific plan or desired effect for the painting, the relationship of one thing to another determines its resolution.
I love the act of painting, and allow the process involved and the work itself the power to inform me. The painting, as it manifests its own reality, acts as a tool for learning and self- determination. The process is a feed-back loop, one thing informing and effecting the next. I endow both the physical paintings and the activity of making the paintings with power. They have life and magic of their own. When resolved, they speak their own language, communicate their own message, and reveal themselves.
