DOROTHY GOODE
Feb 05, 2003 - Mar 01, 2003

EVASION: New paintings and drawings by DOROTHY GOODE. This will be Goode's second solo exhibit at Butters Gallery. Most recently, she has worked on a series of small tempera paintings that are further distilled and abstracted--as well as more color-charged--than her previous works. Also in this show, we will see how Goode has continued her more representational explorations in her literal figure drawings. In these, she starkly renders fragmented female figures in open, airy, highly volumetric compositions.

The work is an evasion meant to secure a refuge for ambivalence. It seeks a buried place, unapproachable directly, that can be made to take on a definite form.--Dorothy Goode

Also this month, we will continue to exhibit Womenkind, a group exhibit featuring seven new artists working with a broad range of methods, materials and concepts.

Ms. Goode’s works explore the body and figuration using obliquely abstract forms. Her bold strokes and scratchings on the canvas enact a layering of moments, locating the still static figure held arrested, and displayed for the viewer.
