About the Artists:
Katz works in a skylighted garden-like studio where he begins with figurative drawings which evolve into emotive, color charged, objective abstractions.
Biography:
Ted Katz was born in Philadelphia, PA. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Franklin and Marshall College and Harvard University. While a fellow of Harvard, Katz studied at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts and at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts. He studied on scholarship at The Art Students' League in New York. At the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris, he concentrated on drawing from the human figure.
The paintings of Ted Katz have been shown in invitational shows at The Demuth Foundation, Lancaster, PA; Millersville University National Painting Invitational; Indiana University Pennsylvania; Pacific University; Salem College, Winston-Salem, NC; Tufts University, Medford, MA; Villanova University; John F. Kennedy Center, Washington, DC; Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe, NM; Fleisher Art Memorial, Philadelphia, PA (Croquis Prize); Moore College of Art; Philadelphia College of Art; Pittsburgh Center for the Arts; and the William Penn Memorial Museum, Harrisburg, PA; Harvard University.
His work has also been shown in solo exhibitions at commercial and university galleries throughout the United States and Europe, including A.M. Katz has worked under grants from The Carnegie Corporation, The Ford Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts, The National Endowment for the Humanities and The Smithsonian Institution. National publications that have written about Katz and his work include The Carnegie Quarterly, Museum News, The New York Times, Newsweek, Art in America, ARTnews, The Oregonian ,The Philadelphia Inquirer and Who’s Who in American Art. His publications include the widely regarded Museums and Schools: Partners in Teaching, University of Pennsylvania Publications, and the textbook series Understanding and Creating Art, McGraw-Hill.
